Can anyone tell me what the road conditions are like along the Tanami from Halls Creek to Wolfe Creek Crater?

Thanks

Greg

G'day Greg,

I haven't travelled the road for a couple of years but it's a big old dirt road.
Nothing too rough. Roadtrains use the road frequently. They travel pretty slow.

Take you time and enjoy the view.

Hoo roo,
Steve

PS, it says your thread was posted at 22:20 on June 14 and I'm replying at 21:54 on June 14. That's weird.

Thanks wholehog.

Google is a very good friend of mine but Halls Creek//Wolfe Creek and the section of the Tanami I am enquiring about is in WA.

There last year. Sections were being remade. It is the main road to two large communities. It is usually in very good condition.

Considering the realignment upgrades on the Tanami at the Halls Creek end, that shouldn't be too bad, but don't expect anything but corrugations on the 40 kilometre access road to the crater.Halls Creek Shire Council aren't the best at communications, so I haven't been able to obtain any up to date information.

Travelled on it a few weeks ago

there are some good sections now bitumised, those sections not bitumised are rough prior to Yeundemu then brilliant after that, we sat on about 100KPH pretty much all the way, apart from some roadworks and some washouts ,to Balgo and then it turned back to poo between there and Bililuna. Nice drive between Wolfe Creek & Halls Creek and the road into Wolfe Creek was good.

HTH

Thanks Cookie for a good report. Much better than Google. All the previous Google report gave was that some roads works were under way.

What are you like on the weather reports? Might need a new outfit and wig though mate!

I didn't think to ask about the roads; our son was here this morning, just a few days back from a motor cycle trip including the Canning Stock Route, Wolfe Creek Crater, and Halls Creek.

Son has confirmed that the Tanami in that section has been done up really well. He felt the Wolfe Creek access road not unduly corrugated, but having just come of the Canning Stock Route, anything would look good.

Hi Greg
Don't be daft like us and head off to Balgo forgetting our careful fuel plan...ran out of diesel 22kms shy of Yuendumu! BUGGER!
Road not really that difficult, anywhere there are mines these days the roads tend to be quite respectable, if corrugated from the trucks.

Gday Greg,

2 weeks I drove from HC to the Mt Bannerman t-off which is south of the Wolfe Creek t-off. The road is reasonable from the highway through to the Ruby Plains homestead, after that it got better and better going south. I was towing a camper trailer and had no issues.

Cheers

Hi Tony,

Did you go down the Mt. Bannerman Road - anything of interest?

Hi Alan,
I camped just west of the creek that flows off Mt B. Probably like yourself, i love that part of world and had a good walk around the hill. Due to family i had to head home earlier than scheduled( thanks to sat phones). At this stage i plan to return to the area to make my way across to Stone Axe Cave via Kurlku- possibly in August but more likely next year.
Have you any desert meanderings planned?

Regards

Hi Tony,

Those sat phones are a double edged sword - hope all is Ok.

This year (in a couple of months time) probably go up the Gary and have a look at a few familiar features, and also do a reconnaissance of the area west of the DCR. Will take the quad.

Cheers
Alan
